Preparing For Your Outdoor Adventure

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

Relaxing when away from the job is done a variety of ways by different people. A relaxing trip to the beach or a day at a museum may be the best way to unwind for some people. However a hiking trip outdoors allows for physical exercise and a chance to see the beautiful sights outside.

The equipment needed to hike outdoor will vary according to the terrain and difficulty of the areas to be traveled. A well worn path may be done in a pair of athletic shoes, shorts and a T-shirt, while more difficult areas would require more durable wear. Proper footwear is important, regardless if you are going for a 1 hour walk or a multiple day hike.

It is important that a Trail Hiking boot give you good protection and stability as well as a proper fit. They should fit without any pinching but still allow you to wiggle your toes comfortably. To protect your feet you should make sure your footwear is waterproof. A lining is present in many new boots that allow your perspiration to escape but prevent moisture from entering the boot, which is better for your feet.

Waterproofing and cleaning should always be done when needed. When waterproofing leather watch what waterproofing material you use. Silicon based treatments are good because they allow the boot to ‘breathe’, which is not the case with wax based methods.

To meet the wide assortment of trails hiked there are many types of hiking footwear. Perfect for short jaunts on groomed trails you can wear hiking sandals, similar to normal sandals but more durable. You may want to wear hiking shoes, which are flexible and lightweight, when traveling light off trail paths or even groomed trails. Trail Running has become a popular activity that is great for hiking shoes. No longer confined to the plain brown boot, hikers of today have a choice in footwear.

Clothing can vary according to the terrain as well. Shorts and a light shirt fit well on a groomed trail, but are not good for tougher hikes. Long pants and long sleeve shirts may be best for off trail hiking to give your skin protection from branches and other objects. It is best to know what type of environment you plan to hike in and dress appropriately.

When you are hiking there are a few other important tips to keep in mind to make your trip an easier and even a safer experience. Remember to bring plenty of drinking water, the amount depends on the type of hiking you plan to do, the length of time you plan to hike and the weather conditions. A cell phone is a good item to have in case of an emergency, you may not need it but it is best to have it just in case. Finally a ladies or men’s sport watch will be useful to allow you to keep track of time. If you plan to hike for 1 hour you can use the watch to mark the halfway point and turn back at the appropriate time.
